The woman who comes to clean our house is illiterate.
But she speaks fluently in four languages - Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi - and also understands Malayalam.
I don't think there are many north Indians - even literate ones - who have this diversity in their cities.

Idea of state identity is quite common - all American states have their own flags.
All our states have unique histories and unique identities.
They are not in contradiction - and there is no need for them to be suppressed.
